Watauga River tailrace

2014-06-22_22.56.27The Watauga River tailrace in Elizabethton, TN is the cousin to the South Holston river. Unlike the South Holston we can and prefer to float the Watauga on no generation. This river has an excellent population of both wild and stocked rainbow and brown trout. Floating through private farmland and rugged rock cliffs make this one of the most beautiful floats on the East coast. This is a year round fishery producing awesome Caddis hatches in the early spring, great Sulfur and Cranefly hatches through the summer and midges year round. On most days dry fly fishing can be done to pods of rising trout in the slicks. One of the more popular sections to float is through the “Quality Zone” where one can fish the famous Caddis Riffles to rising brown and rainbow trout. If the timing is right and you are feeling crazy we can bring out the big rods and streamers to throw for the striped bass that move up the river in the summer months. This float is accommodating for anglers of all skill levels and a great way to see the water East
